Depression - Herbal Tonics for Depression
The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say "I'm depressed" when in fact they mean "I'm fed up because I've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly.
With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks. Symptoms can also become severe enough to interfere with day-to-day activities.
People with a depressive illness cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who suffer from depression.
Types of Depression
Depressive disorders come in different forms. Three of the most common are Major Depression, Dysthymia, and Bipolar Disorder. Even within these types of depression there are variations in the number of symptoms, their severity, and persistence.
Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms (see symptom list below) that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Some people have a single episode of depression, but many have episodes that recur.
Dysthymia is a less severe type of depression that lasts a long time but involves less severe symptoms. If you suffer from dysthymia you probalby lead a normal life, but you may not be functioning well or feeling good. People with dysthymia may also experience major depressive episodes at some time in their lives.
Bipolar Disorder (also called manic-depression) is another type of depressive disorder. Bipolar disorder is thought to be less common than other depressive disorders. If you have bipolar disorder you are troubled by cycling mood swings - usually severe highs (mania) and lows (depression). The mood swings are sometimes dramatic and rapid, but usually are more gradual. When in the depressed stage, a person can have any or all of the symptoms of a depressive disorder.
Herbal Tonics
A combination of herbs is usually more effective and preferred for treatment of depression. The tonics are prepared with special consideration to neutralizing the side effects caused by one and with consideration to the specific situation of the individual who is taking it. Since the herbs may interact with prescription medicines, make sure you check with your doctor before starting on any herb if you are currently taking any prescription medications.
Ingredients: Vitex, black cohosh, wild yam root, licorice, sarsaparilla, false unicorn root, red raspberry leaf, dong quai, motherwort, royal jelly, squaw vine, maca, suma, oatstraw, fo-ti, cooked rehmannia, siberian ginseng, damiana, ligusticum wallichi, muirapuama, fructus lycii.
Kava Blend: Mix equal parts of kava, lemon balm, valerian root and St. John's wort. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 tsp. of herb mix. Drink 1 cup three times daily, one hour after meals.
Chinese Herbs: Bupleurum and dong quai make up a Chinese herbal formula that helps reduce anxiety, irritability, and depression. Take 1,000 milligrams of a bupleurum and dong quai combination formula two or three times daily for two weeks out of every month (if you are a woman, take it for the two weeks prior to the anticipated onset of your menstrual period).
Gentian Root Tea: Steep 1/2 ounce each of finely chopped poplar bark and gentian root in two pints of water for fifteen minutes. Boil and add 1/2ounce each of agrimony and centaury. Simmer for ten minutes, cool, and strain. You can add honey for sweetener if you desire. Take three or four tablespoons before meals.

Need some help about a women in balance supplement??
I had a baby almost 8 months ago, and ever since then my hormones have been really of out it, and earlier this month i bought some supplements from a place called "Herbal Healer", called "Women in Balance"... Its all natural, and for all women of all ages.
Well, i started spotting about 13 dpo, and never started my period.Meanwhile, im still taking these supplements..Till last thursday, when i kinda suspected i *might* be pregnant.
Last friday, sunday and monday, i took 4 pregnancy tests and all came out dark positives.
Here is what's in them..
Soy Isoflavones, Kava Kava, Wild Yam Extract, Licorice4:1 extract, Dong Quai powder, Red Raspberry powder, Black cohosh extract, chasteberry, ginger root powder, red clover and Ginkgo standardized extract.
Does anyone know if any of these would make a positive pregnancy test result? or am i really pregnant? i asked my naturopath dr, and she said they shouldnt, but stop taking them and test again next week... what do yall think? Thanks!
I'm sure you are pregnant.
I hope you've already stoped taking these pills.
I am looking at my herbal remedies book.
Can't find Kava Kava.
Wild Yam is an anti inflamitory, and antiseptic. It is the starting point for synthesization of hormones for the contraceptive pill and for natural progesteron. Used for cramps and arthritus, and other types of pains, and nausia.
Licorice has many medicinal uses, it should be avoided in pregnancy, large doses can cause water reention and exacerbate high blood pressure, and near due date can cause labor pains.
Dong Quai I can not find.
I don't have red raspberry, But raspberry leaves it says Used to promote an easy birth by tonifying the uterus. and is an astringent , antiseptic, can be used to treat diareah and thrush, It says to avoid in early pregnancy except with poffesional advise, best taken durring last three months.
Can not find Black cohosh extract. But this website has some interesting information, and says that the affects on pregnancy have not been rigorously studied, so not to take it unless under health care suppervision.http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/BlackCohosh.asp
Ginger root says you should excersise caution, if you have had a history of miscarriage. Its a digestive aid, and if used in large doses can bring on menstruation.
Red clover I can not find.
Ginkgo Improves blood flow, anti inflamitory, relaxes lungs, it has many uses.
This website says kava kava is likely unsafe, raspberry, and ginger root is most likely safe, Dong qui and Black cohosh are most likely unsafe. And contains more information on herbal used durring pregnancy. http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/naturalherbsvitamins.html
It seems that many of these have been found that they can cause complications durring pregnancy. I would just make sure your doctor is aware, that you were taking these, because if you do have problems, it might make it easier for your doctor to diagnose them. I would not worry about the long run. You didn't know you were preganant, You haven't been pregnant that long, and if you have stopped taking them and you don't have any problems so far, don't worry, everything is probably fine, and stress won't do your pregnancy any good. Even the ones it says not to use durring pregnancy, it says only under a doctors care, so hopefully its not any thing that bad, if its possible to use it under a doctors care. I wish you the best, and have a happy pregnancy.
